Secure Web Site Transaction with Secure Socket Layer (SSL) SSL is a protocol developed for transmitting private documents via the Internet. SSL works by using a private key to encrypt data that is transferred over the SSL connection. Both Netscape Navigator and Internet Explorer support SSL, and many Web sites use the protocol to obtain confidential user information (such as credit card numbers). This is an example of an ImagiNET client that is implementing SSL for credit card transactions for reserving cellular phone rentals in Japan. 1. The customer views the Web site and determines if they want to order a product or service.
2. If the customer decides to place an order, they select the online form. A security dialogue box then appears telling the customer that they are entering a secure area.
3. The customer then enters the requested information to order the product. Notice the blue key in the bottom left hand corner of the browser. This key symbolizes a secure document.
4. Once the order form is completed, the customer submits the information, which is then encrypted with a certified private key, and is sent securely to the business for processing.
